Hacking Chinese

A better way of learning Mandarin

Let’s play 迷霧中 (Into the Haze)

A few week’s ago, I posted an article about 迷霧中 (Into the Haze), a new text adventure game for Chinese learners. Imagine an interactive graded reader, where the story develops based on your choices and you have to pay attention and make wise decisions to win through.

Actually, there’s no need to imagine it, because I just uploaded a video of me playing  a small part of the game. The text and audio from the game is in Mandarin, but to show how the game works, my own commentary is in English, and I also summarise what’s going on in case it’s too hard or too fast to follow. Also, in the actual game, you can pause whenever you want and use the built-in dictionary.

Let’s play 迷霧中 (Into the Haze)

The game takes place after a catastrophe that left the city covered in a poisonous haze. As the main character in the game, you have to go into the haze to find your lost brother. Here’s the video of me playing the game for roughly twenty minutes:

Of course, there’s much more to the game than this. The video only covers one of the ways the game can start, but there are many more options and lots of things left undiscovered, even for the places actually visited in the video. Exploring the game fully can keep you occupied (while learning) for a long time! For more information about the game and how it works, please refer to the launch post, though.

I already tried the demo of this game and the other one, Escape. I like how the story starts. It’s just I think there are too much pannels (dictionary, choices you make and choices you made) and buttons to focus on. I got used to it, eventually, but I like to see the game more “simplified”.

Yes, that is certainly a problem. We’re working on making the interface easier to use (and have already improved it somewhat). This is an ongoing process, though! If you have specific suggestions, please let us know. 🙂
